The traditional sun salutations are a powerful way to begin the practice of yoga. This energizing and dynamic sequence provides a very efficient tool to open and strengthen the body, and is therefore ideal to prepare for the practice of asanas.
The curriculum contains most of the essential postures of the hatha yoga tradition, including backward bends, forward bends, side bends, twists, and inversions. Our Teacher Training Course puts a strong emphasis on the technology of effective instruction, and each asana is introduced in a very systematic and thorough manner, including its origin in the traditional texts, the meaning of its Sanskrit name, its health benefits, its emotional effects, its subtle energetic properties, and its chakra activation. The presentations elaborate on details of physical performance, variations, props, forbiddances, alignment, corrections, and the evolution of the posture.
The teachings on breath control are based on traditional techniques from the ancient yogic scriptures (such as Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Shiva Samhita, and Gerandha Samhita). The practice is inspired by the authentic wisdom of B.N.S. Iyengar (a direct disciple of the legendary Krishnamacharya). The primary instructors of this course studied with this great yogi in a one-on-one setting in Mysore, India.
The course begins with basic breathing exercises and concludes with very powerful practices of breath and mind control. The holistic teachings of pranayama encompass physiological mechanisms, mental concentration, subtle energy flow, and spiritual effects.
Bandha, Mudra, and Kriya
The course introduces the three classical energy locks: mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and jalandhara bandha, which are associated with the pranayama and mudra practices of kundalini yoga.
A careful selection of effective purification techniques supports a harmonious evolution on the physical, emotional, and mental level. (The methods are based on the traditional shat karma kriya system from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika)
Our Teacher Training Course puts an emphasis on meditation as the highest aspect of yoga. We begin with simple techniques of breath awareness to calm and relax the mind. The practice continues with more advanced methods to open a path towards altered states of consciousness.
Practical Philosophy & Ethics
The comprehensive lectures transmit a general understanding of the metaphysical principles of yoga and advaita vedanta and provide an introduction to the classical paths of yoga: jnana, bhakti, karma, and raja yoga.
A lucid and clear analysis of the relevant ancient scriptures is one of the characteristic features of this course. The teachings about practical philosophy are mainly based on the two primary texts of the yogic tradition, the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita.
A modern interpretation of these reliable sources helps participants integrate this ancient wisdom into daily life. The highest spiritual knowledge of the yogic tradition is translated into accessible language and applied to the context of modern life.
